Saying what you like doing

Regular -er verbs in the present tense · Definite articles (le, la, les)

To say you like doing something, put the second verb in the infinitive. English uses "-ing"; French does not.

  • J'aime lire. (I like reading.)
  • Je préfère marcher. (I prefer walking.)
  • Je déteste attendre. (I hate waiting.)
  • Elle adore voyager. (She loves travelling.)

The strength runs: détester < ne pas aimer < aimer bien < aimer < adorer.

With a noun instead of a verb, use the definite article — and French keeps it where English drops it: "J'aime le café." (I like coffee.), not J'aime café.

Knowing the rule is not the same as producing it.
