Avoir ("to have") in the present tense
CEFR A1
Avoir means "to have". Like être, it is irregular and must be memorized. It is also used in the fixed expression for age: "j'ai ... ans" (I am ... years old — literally "I have ... years").
| Subject | Form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| j' | ai | J'ai un frère. (I have a brother.) |
| tu | as | Tu as une sœur. (You have a sister.) |
| il / elle | a | Elle a vingt ans. (She is twenty years old.) |
| nous | avons | Nous avons une maison. (We have a house.) |
| vous | avez | Vous avez des enfants ? (Do you have children?) |
| ils / elles | ont | Ils ont un chat. (They have a cat.) |
More examples: "J'ai un chien." (I have a dog.) · "Tu as quel âge ?" (How old are you?)
What this unlocks
Knowing the rule is not the same as producing it.
This page explains the pattern. The track drills it: the point arrives inside a mini-dialogue, then production marked against a CEFR descriptor, then a module test that returns you to your two weakest sessions if you miss it.
